The morning after
This isn't specifically about our bike ride, but I gotta say it -
What a depressing post-election morning. I am sad, and angry, and full of shame for my country, and fear for the future of not only this country but the world.
I am totally shocked that the majority of Americans have voted for Bush, Cheney, and the Republican agenda. I could almost see why people would've voted for Bush the first time - those who bought into the false sincerity in his voice as he talked his line of "compassionate conservativism". But to vote for them knowing that it's a vote for more of same xenophobic, militaristic, homophobic, despoil the environment, put christ in the government, take from the poor and give to the rich behavior we've seen over the last four years is almost more than I can stomach.
It's hard to keep thinking of myself as a populist or leftist when I'm drawn to an almost inescapable conclusion that the mass of people in this country are willfully stupid. It seems that my countrymen (and women, to a lesser extent) really do believe that the American Empire has a right and duty to impose its will through force of arms, and to the victor belong the (sp)oils of war.
Last night we went to bed talking of Canada or New Zealand. If anybody out there has an offer for a lovely family to come spend some years in another country, we'd be anxious to talk to you.
