Reading Vietnam
The December issue of Harper's has a really good article entitled "War Wounds" by Tom Bissell. Bissell, who is twenty-nine, writes about traveling to Vietnam with his father, a war-damaged veteran of the Vietnam conflict. Very well written and an honest look at father/son relationships and the hope for healing after all these years.
I also just finished "Catfish and Mandala" by Andrew X. Pham. Pham writes about his family's escape from post-war Vietnam, their difficult adjustment to life in the States, and his return to Vietnam, in his thirties, with no money and a beater bicycle to search out the ghosts of his childhood. Very well done and a good read.
